Here are 10 smart city projects that were recently awarded, put out to bid, or added to an agency’s future spending plans. Here’s three examples of “smart” projects that have recently been awarded to vendors by cities across the U.S. Technical Support and Maintenance – City of Jacksonville, FLJacksonville has released a contract award to Sourcecode North America valued at $12.5M for SmartForms, technical support and maintenance to improve workflows and connectivity. Support for Energy/Water Management Technology – City of Aztec, NMAztec recently distributed a contract worth an estimated $6.1M to Itron, Inc. to offer software and support services related to energy and water resource management. Park and Recreation Renovation – City of Berkeley, CA Berkeley has awarded a contract projected to be valued at $1.1M to Bay Construction for upgrading and modernizing a city park, picnic facility, and play area. Currently Open Bids and RFPsBids and RFPs are the bread and butter of government contracting. These smart city projects are a few examples of the kinds of contracts recently put out to bid. Fiber Cable Construction – City of Ketchikan, AK Ketchikan is seeking proposals from qualified subsea fiber cable construction firms to develop an optical fiber connection underwater, connecting to Prince Rupert on the mainland in Canada. Gunshot Detection System – City of Milwaukee, WIMilwaukee is looking for a vendor to provide the city’s police department with the latest technological developments, products and services within the field of gunshot detection. Zero Waste Consultant Services – City of San Jose, CA San Jose is seeking proposals from qualified firms to provide consulting services to develop a Zero Waste Element to enhance the city’s broader Climate Smart San Jose plan. Water Meters and Installation– City of Cape May, NJCape May is receiving proposals to provide the city with technologically up-to-date water meters, plus installation of the meters and related materials. Future Budgets and Spending PlansHere’s a look into the spending areas that local officials are targeting for coming months and years. Smart Signal Control System – City of Gilbert, AZGilbert plans to spend approximately $5.6M from now until 2022 to install an adaptive signal timing system and associated equipment at intersections throughout the city. LED Lighting Conversion – City of Richmond, VARichmond will include $2.8M in its budget between 2020 and 2023 for street lighting projects, including installing new LED street lights, and converting current street lighting to LED.

Baltimore has included $6M in its Capital Improvement Plan through 2025 to revitalize communities by creating an interconnected system of green spaces throughout the city.
