Ooredoo launches smart city plan to enrich lives in Maldives
As part of the initiative, Council Lead Partner Ooredoo introduced Ooredoo Wi-Fi Hangout Areas across prime spots in the capital city including hospitals, ferry terminals, youth centers and cafés. The company will continue to expand the service across the country, enabling customers with seamless access to a fast, secure and affordable Internet connection from wherever they are. Speaking at the launch event in Male’ recently, Maldives Vice President Ahmed Adeeb said: “Ooredoo has played an instrumental role in establishing a world class telecommunication sector in the Maldives. We applaud Ooredoo for their support in bringing our vision of establishing smart cities in the Maldives to life. Connecting our people to smart technologies will instigate innovative solutions that tackle key challenges that are prevalent in an urban society, thus paving the way to a better quality of life.”
1,500 young women take Cisco up on its challenge
Cisco's Young Women’s Innovation Grand Challenge encouraged young women between 13 and 18 to suggest new solutions and technologies to bridge devices and objects to the Internet of Everything (IoT) in categories ranging from smart cities to manufacturing. Submissions came from 1,500 young women from 171 countries. The winners? Two sisters from China took the top prize and $20,000 with their IoT-based Global Container Management System. Goal of the competition hosted by Council Lead Partner Cisco was to encourage young women to become the future IoT workforce.
Verizon fast-forwards the Yosemite experience
As Yosemite National Park gears up for its 125th anniversary, Council Lead Partner Verizon has made it possible for park visitors to talk, text, surf the web and use their favorite apps at 4G LTE speeds in Yosemite Village. Verizon is the first and, to date, only wireless provider to offer visitors these capabilities.
Visionary Black & Veatch groundwater replenishment project honored
A joint project with the Orange County Sanitation District and the Orange County Water District recently received the California Association of Sanitation Agencies Achievement Award. Council Associate Partner Black & Veatch was the consulting engineer on the agencies' Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) project. “Water plays a critical role in maintaining sustainable communities, and California’s water supply issues have an impact on consumers around the world. This expansion project and the longstanding partnership to develop the GWRS are key examples of resilient and holistic water planning," noted Cindy Wallis‐Lage, President of Black & Veatch’s water business.
