Garbage dumping problem: A landfill management policy on the anvil

Overflowing garbage from the bins dumped are quite a common sight in India. In fact, India is fast becoming the largest dump in the world. According to the reports, the waste generation from Indian cities has increased by 50 per cent in the past decade and continues to grow alarmingly. In fact, more than 90 per cent of waste is dumped in open, which is a bigger problem. The solve this growing menace, the Indian government has decided to come up with a policy on management of landfill sites.

The development assumes significance after the cave-in incident at the Ghazipur landfill site in east Delhi in which two persons were killed. Following the incident, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) and IIT-Delhi had joined hands to work on measures to stabilise the Ghazipur landfill, for a period of one year.

Environment Secretary CK Mishra said, “We are working on guidelines for management of landfill site and very soon, we will come up with a policy on that.” He said that the policy will address the concerns raised after the Ghazipur incident.
