Delhi and Maharashtra to eliminate power thefts with FlexNet

Submitted by scc india staff on December 15, 2016
Maharashtra and Delhi, which have signed an agreement with Council’s lead partner Xylem, are all set to be free from the power theft menace in coming months. The two states, in association with Xylem’s Sensus, will implement advanced metering solutions.  For this, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co Ltd (MSEDCL) and Reliance Infrastructure backed BSES Yamuna Power Ltd (BYPL) will implement FlexNet, Sensus’ Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solution in the Nagpur and Delhi Service areas on a trial basis. This technology trial will start in the three months, and will simplify installation and commissioning of the Sensus FlexNet AMI solution.  Through this pilot project, the requirement of MSEDCL and BYPL in terms of coverage and capacity along with the needs of smart grids will be tested, by the Sensus FlexNet AMI solution. The FlexNet Long Range Radio technology has exceptional penetration and reach to enable a simple and robust architecture for all applications.  FlexNet receives accurate usage data and has also reduced estimated power leaks by an incredible 94 per cent, empowering utility staff to focus on stopping leaks or address other customer concerns. The FlexNet system gives cities a scalable, reliable communications network that will allow them to handle billing with greater efficiency and accuracy — no matter the extent of the population covered by these utilities. The system is expected to help MSEDCL and BYPL reduce power theft & data loss and improve billing & collection processes. With operations and service facilities in five continents, Sensus is a global leader in utility infrastructure systems and resource conservation. At present, around 32 per cent of Indians live in urban areas. Geographical conditions peculiar to different cities and different categories of consumers being served by the distribution grid make it very challenging to deploy uniform urban smart metering communication networks. Sensus has a unique capability and expertise to ensure that the technology can optimise the asset life of meters and infrastructure, without compromising the data or the analytics platforms.
