And the man responsible for IBM's smart cities messaging worldwide is Rich Michos, Vice President Marketing, Smarter Cities. There's a lot underneath that umbrella, including client engagement with innovative cities. This role gives him a truly global perspective and makes him a great choice to provide an overview of IBM's go-forward plans.

Reed Pangborn is AT&T's area vice president for government, education and medical. In that role, he is responsible for helping cities "mobilize" their applications. An active runner, hiker and skier, he is a happy resident of Phoenix, where it is easy to have an outdoor lifestyle.

Laurent Schmitt is a compact man with an air of old-world politesse. He has worked in several executive capacities in different parts of Alstom, the $26-billion French maker of power and transport equipment. He started with the company in sales in 2000, back when it was Areva T&D (before its acquisition by Alstom). From there, he climbed the ladder through marketing and then roles in strategy and business development.
