ABB has commissioned a high-performance wireless broadband network for the historic city of Venice, Italy. The wi-fi solution comprises a network of fixed and mobile nodes that can handle more than 200 gigabytes of data and 40,000 subscribers a day. It is equipped with 200 discretely positioned wireless mesh routers, that have been supplied by Tropos Networks, a company acquired by ABB in 2011, which now forms a part of ABB's comprehensive communications offering.


In the interview below, George Karayannis, VP of U.S. Smart City Solutions for Council Associate Partner Schneider Electric, discusses technologies that help make cities smarter, more efficient, sustainable, resilient and more livable and how they empower citizens' daily choices about energy consumption.

With analytics technology from Council Global Partner IBM, the Durham, N.C., Police Department reduced the amount of violent crime in a two square mile region of the city by more than 50 percent during a four-year span from 2007-2011. Based on historical data, they created an intelligent database, where they could access and visualize data that established relationships across people, places and other entities. Armed with that information, they could be smarter in how they allocated their resources.

In a typical year, over 35 million passengers and 96 thousand tons of cargo pass through the Barcelona El Prat Airport. AENA is responsible for airport operations, and its smart airport solution boasts a dynamic, intelligent infrastructure. The control environment handles over 1,000,000 signals and includes control of all escalators, elevators and passenger moving walkways; power management; air conditioning; and fire safety systems.
