Use case: Waste Management

Nick Pickering, Pollin8

30% of NZ landfill waste (3.6M tonnes) could be recycled. Up to 70% of recycling in some regions goes to landfill due to contamination or lack of knowledge. Pollin8, supported by Waipa DC Waste Minimisation Fund, aims to improve recycling rates. Their SaaS "Audit Assist Tool" uses image recognition on recycling trucks to identify issues automatically and supplements audits with manual checks, reducing costs and improving efficiency in recycling management.

12:30 - 01:00

Digital technology as an enabler for emissions reduction and climate adaptation planning

Tom Newitt, Spark Sustainability Lead
Mark Thomas and Mitch Pham, NZ Tech

New Zealand has a long road ahead to meet its emissions targets. But the window to take action to avoid the worst impacts of climate change is closing fast, and everyone must play a role in Aotearoa’s transition to a low-carbon economy. As an enabler, digital technologies are rapidly evolving and converging, unlocking new use-cases that can support decarbonisation and broader sustainability benefits.

Spark Sustainability Lead Tom Newitt will share insights and learnings on the critical enabling role of digital technologies, how NZ is approaching emissions reduction and climate adaptation planning, and how the tech sector is navigating these processes. Then handing over to NZ Tech to look at their new report and the climate tech roadmap from a city lens.
