Smart Cities Council (SCC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Johannes Hammerstein as SCC Thought Leader – Capital Markets, strengthening the Council’s global expertise at the intersection of investment, innovation, emerging technology and sustainable urban transformation.

As cities and communities face increasingly complex challenges, access to innovation alone is not enough. Turning promising ideas and technologies into scalable, real-world solutions requires investment, commercial capability, strong partnerships and access to the right capital.

Johannes brings extensive international experience across capital markets, corporate fundraising, strategic advisory, business development and emerging technology, making his expertise particularly relevant as SCC expands the ways it supports members, innovators, governments and its wider global ecosystem.

Connecting Capital with Innovation

Johannes is Managing Partner at SpHHere Partners, where he works with founders, technology companies, investors and ecosystem leaders to support fundraising, strategic growth and international market development.

Throughout his career, he has been directly involved in capital-raising transactions across multiple industries and international markets and has advised organizations on corporate structuring and strategies designed to support growth and investment.

Before founding SpHHere, Johannes held roles with organizations including Kylla, Jefferies & Co., JP Morgan, Dominick & Dominick and Merrill Lynch & Co.

His work today increasingly sits at the intersection of strategic capital, DeepTech, AI, robotics, infrastructure, sustainability and smart cities.

It is this combination of financial-market experience and understanding of emerging technologies that Johannes brings to his role as an SCC Thought Leader.

Capital as an Enabler of Transformation

For Smart Cities Council, capital is an increasingly important part of the smart cities conversation.

Cities and communities around the world are not short of ideas. Innovative technologies are emerging across water, energy, mobility, waste, infrastructure, AI and digital services. The challenge is often moving those solutions from concept and pilot programs to sustainable, commercially viable deployment at scale.

Johannes will contribute thought leadership around the role capital can play in bridging this gap — connecting innovation with investment and helping build stronger pathways between technology developers, investors, governments and the organizations responsible for delivering the cities and communities of the future.

His appointment also complements the development of SCC Capital, which is expanding the Council's capability to support innovation and investment across its international network.

From Thought Leadership to Practical Outcomes

SCC's Thought Leaders bring specialist knowledge and diverse perspectives to some of the most important issues shaping cities and communities globally.

The objective is not simply to discuss emerging trends, but to help translate expertise into practical insights, connections and opportunities that can support better outcomes.

Johannes has already been contributing to this conversation through SCC's Urban Insights. His recent article, From Landfills to Landscapes: Leveraging Smart Tech for Localized Waste Recovery, explored how AI, automation and decentralized waste-recovery systems can help cities turn organic waste into local resources while reducing emissions and strengthening resilience.

His perspective reflects a broader question increasingly confronting the smart cities sector: how do we create the commercial and investment environments that allow good ideas to become scalable solutions?

As SCC Thought Leader – Capital Markets, Johannes will continue to explore these issues while contributing his expertise across SCC's media, events, programs and global network.

Strengthening SCC's Global Knowledge Network

Johannes's appointment comes as Smart Cities Council continues to strengthen its global network of regional leaders, partners and specialist Thought Leaders.

Under SCC's “Local Action, Global Impact” approach, this network brings together expertise from different disciplines and markets to address the interconnected challenges facing cities and communities.

Capital markets form an important part of that ecosystem.

By connecting financial expertise with technology, innovation, government and urban transformation, SCC aims to help create stronger pathways from idea to investment, and from investment to impact.

Smart Cities Council welcomes Johannes Hammerstein as SCC Thought Leader – Capital Markets and looks forward to his continued contribution to the Council's global community and the conversations shaping the future of smart, sustainable and resilient cities.
