Together with the community, Lake Macquarie City Council has laid the foundation for creating a more connected, innovative and resilient city. The Council continues to invest in Smart Cities initiatives such as the community IoT network, city insights sensor program, the Fibre City project and the Smart Beaches project (winner 2020 Smart Cities Awards Future of Place category).

In 2019 the Council made the commitment to support local innovation with the adoption of the Imagine Lake Mac: Innovators Support Roadmap. In 2020 the Council adopted a Data Sharing Policy which commits Council to open as much data as possible while protecting privacy and complying with legislation.
