The project will be carried out under the GCC’s Mega Street project which aims to redevelop the city roads to promote non-motorised traffic. Under this project 150 km of road and allied facilities will be developed in six phases.

“In Guindy roads behind the Guindy Railway station including Velachery Road will be taken up under the project. Similarly roads around Washermenpet Metro station and Washermenpet railway station will be taken up. Escalators pedestrian pathways skywalks and other facilities will be provided to interlink various transport modes including MTC” a senior GCC official told the media.

The authorities have started preparing the project report based on which the project will be implemented jointly by the civic body the state Highways Department Southern Railways and Chennai Metro Rail Ltd.

The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) and the civic authorities conducted a primary inspection of the area last week. Guindy and Washermenpet are among the top hotspots that see a huge rush in peak hours.
