Training and Events If you don’t know where to start, don’t worry. You’re not alone. Smart cities is a broad term, but it doesn’t need to be overwhelming. The Council has resources that can help you visualize what you want for your city and outline a path to achieving that.
  • Smart Cities Readiness Guide. The Smart Cities Readiness Guide is the world’s leading publication designed to help you create a vision, build an action plan and measure your progress, and it’s based on experience from cities like yours that have been there and done that. More than 1,700 city leaders are using it to help their cities become smarter. Access the Smart Cities Readiness Guide.
  • Smart Cities Council Newsletter. The Council publishes newsletters that are full of new research, approaches and success stories. Join more than 100,000 smart cities leaders who subscribe not only for inspiration, but also for practical advice and best practices that help them get more from their smart cities initiatives. Subscribe now.
  • Smart Cities Week. Smart Cities Week is a series of annual events that bring hundreds of public and private leaders together to discuss proven strategies and new technologies that are making a meaningful difference in cities. Not only will you get to hear firsthand about what works and why, but you will also get to network with your peers who are working to address the same challenges you are.

Readiness WorkshopsIf you are still early in your smart cities journey but want hands-on help to plan and prepare, consider hosting a Smart Cities Readiness Workshop. These workshops are highly-interactive sessions that bring the lessons of the Council’s Smart Cities Readiness Guide to life. These are not one-size-fits-all classes. Rather, they are customized learning experiences that give you and your key staff and stakeholders a strong foundation in smart cities theory as it relates to your city’s goals. Depending on your needs, the workshop can be conducted in as little as a half-day; more advanced topics are addressed over a two-day workshop. Ready to talk?

More than 600 smart cities practitioners have attended the Council’s Readiness Workshops. Cities like San Diego; Charlotte; Chicago; Boston; Dallas; Dubai; Nice, France; South Africa; Ajmer, India; and Allahabad, India have jump started their smart cities initiatives using the Council’s Readiness Workshops and Programs.  For example, Boston used its Readiness Workshop to develop an initial plan with Boston Smart Utilities to redevelop a 200-acre site downtown. “Without the support of Smart Cities Council, we could not have harnessed the talent required to make this a success,” said Travis Sheehan, Senior Infrastructure Advisor, Boston Redevelopment Authority. Illinois’ Readiness Workshop was the U.S.’s first Smart States event, an event other states are evaluating to replicate.   Readiness PlanningReady to talk?

The Council’s resources are the culmination of years of experience by leading smart cities experts — experts who have worked directly on projects that have resulted in meaningful transformations for the communities they served. The Council can bring these experts together to consult for your city, providing vendor-neutral guidance that’s based on real-world success. Over a dozen cities and utilities have benefited from the Council’s Advisory Services:

  • Assessments. Evaluation of a district, city or region to determine its strengths, opportunities and challenges from a smart cities perspective. Gain insight into the best places to start. Learn why and how your departments can share infrastructure and share data for better results at lower cost. And get metrics you can use to measure progress and prove your results to constituents. This assessment is in conformance with relevant international standards and its scope is determined in close consultation with the client.

  • Plans. A top-level, vendor-neutral plan for a smart district or city. This is a roadmap for smart cities that combines long-term vision with key early actions and supporting strategies. This plan also includes implementation guidance for effective smart cities procurement and suggested key performance indicators.
