A large-scale Internet of Things network is now live in the Tampa Bay Metro Region

Advances in sensing and wireless communications technologies have reached a point where they have become financially viable for cities, counties, and utilities to remotely monitor their infrastructure, assets, and the environment - at scale.

In fact, several utilities in the Tampa Metro Region are operating Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) for water metering on Senet’s newly deployed public LoRaWAN network covering over 1,600 square miles across Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties, including the cities of Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg.

LoRaWAN is a low-power, long-range wireless network protocol purpose-built for connecting low-cost sensing solutions. It is more cost effective and flexible than cellular and RF networks, and its open standard allows a single network to be used for multiple applications.

Using LoRaWAN to deliver community and environmental benefits

Sensors and analytics have been available for businesses, utilities and municipalities for some time. However, many have struggled to deploy a large number of smart sensor-based applications across their infrastructure because of high costs, battery power limitations, unreliable communication service, and time-lagging data.

Not Anymore.

Senet is currently partnering with several solution providers and integrators to drive innovation into the Tampa region and across the United States. Solution deployments and pilots in the following areas of critical infrastructure and essential business activities are being initiated:

Water/Sewer/Storm Water Infrastructure

  • Water metering
  • Leak detection and pressure sensing
  • Flood level detection and overflow risk
  • Water quality and contaminant monitoring
  • Reclamation water use

Asset Tracking

  • High value municipal assets
  • Asset tracking at ports and terminals
  • Supply chain tracking
  • Boats, trailers, and other commercial and personal assets

Building and Campus Monitoring

  • Air quality monitoring
  • Employee and student safety
  • Building infrastructure monitoring (plumbing, HVAC)
  • Building tilt and other environmental safety sensing

Waste Management

  • Fill level monitoring for waste and recycling removal
  • Fleet route optimization
  • City equipment tracking: trailers, dumpsters, roll offs
