Washington, D.C. – June 15, 2016 – Jason Nelson, a seasoned marketing executive with a passion for helping cities and businesses use technology to prosper, has joined the Smart Cities Council as Executive Director for Partner Engagement. He takes on a key role at the Council, which is currently expanding its partner portfolio to include a number of new sectors and new regions around the globe.

Prior to joining the Council, Nelson was Senior Vice President with FierceMarkets, where he launched multi-platform media brands in several industries, including energy, telecom and information technology (IT). All three verticals are integral to the development of smart cities.

"Jason's keen understanding of the energy, telecom and IT sectors made him an obvious choice to work with the Council as we broaden our partner eco-system," said Council Chairman Jesse Berst. "In his career Jason has successfully built businesses, systems and teams, so he's a natural to engage with the world-leading companies that are involved with the Council or hope to be in the future."

Berst noted the Council recently launched a special partnership category for utilities, a move that reflects how critical it is for cities that want to be more sustainable to closely collaborate with their local electric power utilities.

"With Jason's knowledge of the energy industry, he will be a tremendous asset in bringing cities and utilities together as partners for a better future," Berst said.

For his part, Nelson described his new role as "the intersection of just about everything that matters."

Image removed."I've got a young son and I want to ensure that he will have a future that offers the livability, workability and sustainability that is at the core of the Council's mission," Nelson said. "At the same time, I relish the opportunity to work closely with best-of-breed companies that are on the ground all over the world implementing the smart technologies that will improve the well-being of cities and citizens."
