Inside Look: What cities were buying and planning in August 2019

Companies looking to supply smart cities with products or services have plenty of opportunities available across the country. As more government agencies begin investing in the smart cities movement, companies in the business-to-government (B2G) marketplace have the chance to take advantage.

Here are 10 smart city projects from the past month that were awarded to a vendor, recently put out to bid or included in an agency’s future spending plan:

Recent Contract Awards

GovWin IQ tracks government projects through their entire lifecycle, including contract award announcements. Here’s three examples of the kinds of “smart” projects that have recently been awarded to vendors by cities across the U.S.

Information Technology Services – City of Baltimore, MD

Baltimore has agreed to award contracts worth $30M to multiple vendors to provide staffing and support for the Baltimore City Office of Information Technology.

Future Leads in Budgets and Spending Plans

Companies interested in selling smart products or services can get the most foresight by finding potential projects within agency budgets and capital spending plans. These projects, found in GovWin IQ, provide vendors with forward visibility to make more strategic decisions. For agencies, the same information offers a look into the spending areas that local officials are beginning to budget for over the coming months and years.

Smart Street Lighting – City of Columbus, OH

Columbus has included $35M in its Capital Improvement Program from 2019-2024 for outfitting the city with smart street lighting technology and supporting materials.

ADA Accessibility – City of Peoria, AZ

Peoria is budgeting nearly $4M over the next 10 years for ADA compliance measures such as identifying accessibility deficiencies, and responding to requests to improve accessibility.

Bicycle Extension – City of Brunswick, ME

Brunswick is planning on spending approximately $2.2M through 2023 to extend one of the city’s bike paths and improve its transportation network for cyclists and pedestrians.
