Bhendi Bazar cluster redevelopment among best smart city plans

Submitted by scc india staff on July 9, 2015

The Central Government has selected Mumbai’s Bhendi Bazar cluster redevelopment project as one of the best smart city proposals and asked BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to share the details with civic authorities across the country.
The Bhendi Bazar cluster redevelopment project has been stuck for the last six years, awaiting various clearances. The Government had allowed cluster redevelopment of 260 old buildings to help authorities create more space in the area with the project spreading over 16.5 acres.
It is Mumbai's biggest and largest cluster redevelopment project. It will transform Bhendi Bazaar into a diverse sustainable community with a healthy neighborhood, creating a vibrant urban area. The area will be redeveloped and space for parking and a playground would be provided. Also, stress will be laid on keeping the area green, with recreational facilities and commercial space also being developed. But first rehabilitation of the project-affected people would be done.
This project involves pulling down 250 buildings and 1,250 shops, and building 17 towers across nine sub-clusters. As the 3,200 houses of Bhendi Bazaar go vertical, more open spaces will be available for parks, parking and other amenities. Residents will get a minimum of 350 sq ft carpet area.
