The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) is set to operate its first 50 electric buses in Kakinada and the connected destinations under the Smart City Mission.

Pune and Dehradun cities have already opted for the e-buses under the Smart City Mission. The Kakinada District Public Transport Officer (DPTO) M Srinivasa Rao told the media that all the 50 electric vehicles would be hired by the APSRTC under the government’s Smart City Mission.

The tenders have been floated for the electric bus services. The trial run for e-buses is yet to be conducted. The vision is to ply electric vehicles in the Kakinada and its connected destinations including Rajamahendravaram and Annavaram.

The Kakinada district unit of the APSRTC has a fleet of 274 buses operating from three depots Kakinada Tuni and Yeleswaram.

Rao said that APSRTC is now accepting cargo orders to transport agriculture and horticulture produce including mango cashew medicines and fish to explore the market potential.

He added that all types of farm produce are being transported in bulk as APSRTC has its services connected to the larger part of the state. Additionally, APSRTC is likely to grant 70 more facilities to the Kakinada district to replace the old vehicles.
